SOUTHFIELD, Mich.--Just three races into their new relationship under the Hendrick Motorsports banner, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and crew chief Tony Eury Jr. posted an impressive runner-up finish in the UAW-Dodge 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 2. The strong performance – coming just a week after the duo’s #88 Chevrolet was damaged at California International Speedway – boosted Earnhardt into the top 10 in NASCAR Sprint Cup points and earned Eury the NASCAR MOOG® “Problem Solver of the Race” Award from Federal-Mogul Corporation.
“Tony Eury did a phenomenal job not only in Las Vegas, but also in getting Dale Jr. back on the track in California after the crash. Even though they were well behind the leaders, they used those laps to learn more about their racecar, and their extra work certainly paid off during the UAW-Dodge 400,” said Tim Nelson, Federal-Mogul motorsports director. “The #88 car just kept getting stronger throughout the day in Las Vegas, and that’s a testament to Tony and an excellent Hendrick Motorsports crew.”
Established this year, the MOOG Problem Solver of the Race and Master Crew Chief of the Year Award celebrate the behind-the-scenes professionals who modify their cars’ set-up throughout the race to ensure the highest possible finish. The Problem Solver of the Race Award is presented to the crew chief whose team finishes in the top 10 and on the lead lap and posts the largest increase in average lap speed from the first half to second half of a race. At the end of the season, Federal-Mogul and the MOOG brand will present the Master Crew Chief of the Year Award for the best overall performance by a Sprint Cup Series crew chief.
“The winners of this award exemplify what the MOOG brand is all about – delivering innovative solutions for the real-world steering and suspension challenges encountered in today’s vehicles, whether those vehicles are on a NASCAR track or a city street,” said MOOG Global Marketing Director Joe Stephan.
